Abstract
This thesis shows some contributions that all religions in general and more specifically the three monotheistic ones (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) can make to the worldwide ethics. The aim is: - On the one hand, to highlight the need of some ethical principles (which are common to all different religions in the world ) so as to contribute to global peace, as well as to describe the ethical consensus that was reached at the Parliament of the Religions in the World (Chicago, 1993), which has meant the biggest ethical agreement from the interreligious dialogue so far (Chapters 1 and 2). - On the other hand, to analyse the contributions the three monotheistic religions (maybe the most questioned) make to the worldwide ethics in terms of ethics of love and compassion, ethics of justice and social responsibility and ethics of peace (Chapters 3 to 6). - Finally, to conclude, the common ethical contributions that monotheistic religions make to a worldwide ethic are detailed, from the interreligious consensus and the ethical analysis of each one of them in the aforementioned aspects (Chapter 7). In the content of this thesis, monotheistic religions (the object of the research) are proved to have a lot to offer in the ethical growth of human beings. In that respect, what is really needed is not the disappearance of religions -as some may think-, but the real need of religious people showing the great ethical contribution their religions make to the world, beginning with eradicating their long history of violence. Although faith has often been a dividing weapon, which has caused wars and prejudice, there is not a single religion whose main principle is hate or violence.
