Abstract
Despite the extraordinary growth of Latin American and Caribbean migration to Europe in the last decade, the issues of migration, the sending and use of remittances, and co-development have only recently appeared in the bi-regional agenda. From the analysis of the available data on migratory and remittance patterns, the evaluation of the current policies and the role of the main actors involved both in the origin and the host countries (governments, banks, money transfer companies, migrant organizations and other NGOs), and the construction of some future scenarios, it is evident that there is plenty of room for improvement in the way migration and its consequences are dealt with within the framework of the so-called “bi-regional strategic association”. In consequence, new cooperation strategies based on their shared interests are proposed, which, if implemented, could: first, improve this migratory relationship; second, foster economic development in the migrants’ origin communities; and, last, in turn, potentially lead both Europe and Latin America to spearhead wider international multilateral efforts to manage migration and remittance flows.
