Abstract
PhD by publication is a new route to obtain a PhD degree. Theses by publication have a strong penetration in Scandinavia countries and minor measure in other European countries. The first PhD in United Kingdom was formally awarded by Cambridge University in 1966. In Spain the theses by publication exist for some time without it is possible to determine when exactly they appear and in that universities. Theses by publication do not have a state regulation but they are regulated by universities. Scientific papers concerning this topic are practically non-existent in Spain. This paper on the regulation of theses by publication in the Spanish universities is justified by the innovation that the theses by publications represent in Spain, the importance that they have in some countries and the influence that they exercise for research productivity of the universities. The study results answer to different research questions on the universities regulation offering this new route to obtain the highest academic degree that universities can award, such as, the type of publication that can be submitted and the minimal number of them, the relevancy and impact of the publications, the dates of publication, the depth and extend of the regulation and the benefits and problems associated to the PhD by publication.
