Abstract
The raise of the Web enable the publication of digital collection of archives, libraries and museum through Web catalogs and poses the question of their integration, namely interoperability. Today the possibilities bring about by technologies such as Semantic Web and linked open data position interoperability in a new baseline, enlarging its possibilities by enabling digital collections be published directly on the web independently of any catalog management systems. Thus digital collection records may have links to and be linked from any resource available on the web, be it a record in another heritage collection or even beyond this context. At the same time these technologies enable new cultural relevant relations to be settled between digital objects of different cultural heritage collections. Which is the role of conceptual models in this context? This paper aims at posing the issues related to interoperability between digital collection in light of the facilities offered by Semantic Web and linked open data technologies. It uses as methodology a state of the art review of theoretical and technical issues, projects, cases, etc., related to interoperability and analyses interoperability solutions based on two parameters, homogeneity/heterogeneity and the preservation of original semantic of the collections to be made interoperable. As results the paper stress the role of semantic models and vocabularies to achieve semantic interoperability between heterogeneous digital collections within the scope of the facilities offered by Semantic Web and linked open data technologies.
