Abstract
Ageing is a natural part of the human development process, and its understanding has become fundamental due to the current demographic figures, where elder population is increasing every year. Little research has been done in our country about the phenomena that go along with the elderly, and of particular importance are the ones associated with cognitive aging and the factors that explain and modulate the characteristics observed on the normal aging, chiefly the ones associated to educative factors. This educative factors look like modulate the cognitive response through the implementation of compensatory cognitive mechanisms ligated to cognitive reserve. This last one has been evaluated in many ways, but its operationalization is not clear yet, especially in contexts where educative variability is very high, like in Peru. This thesis will use reading level as a measure of cognitive reserve, which is more accordant to Peruvian reality; furthermore, will seek to analyze how this factor rebounds on cognitive performance, specifically on executive control. This thesis has two clear objectives. First, to analyze reading level as a measure of cognitive reserve. Second, to explain the cognitive mechanisms of implementation of this last one starting at the executive control. We believe that the reading level has an important effect on cognition, but that this is modulated by executive control; hence we pretend to have a better operationalization of the cognitive reserve construct from the executive control and analyze the heft of education ligated variables on cognition. 14 For this purpose, two studies were made. The first one pursued to compare the cognitive performance on a large neuropsychological battery of two groups: one with a high reading level, and another one with a low level; besides estimating that the reading level factor predicts neuropsychological tests ratings better than years of schooling. Finally, we looked to analyze how reading level affects the latent variables of working memory and long term memory access. This first sample was constituted by 87 old healthy adults, from which 44 were male (mean = 63.66 years) and 43 were female (mean = 66.14). Our results shows that subjects with high reading level have a better general cognitive performance, being this differences more notorious in executive functioning, abstract reasoning and processing speed. We observed also that reading level is a better predictor of executive functioning performance than years of schooling, and that its influence is moderated over the latent variable of access to contents of the long term memory...
