Abstract
Cement is the most commonly used binder material in civil construction. This material is mainly composed of silicate phases, aluminate phases, gypsum and, to a lesser extent, ferrite. When become hydrated, these components lead to some crystalline phases and other phases of amorphous character known as hydrated calcium silicates (C-S-H gels). The C-S-H gels account for more than half of the total of hydrated products and have primary responsibility for the mechanical properties of cement-based materials. These gels consist of finite chains of corner-sharing [SiO4] tetrahedra, dreierketten type, which are repeated following the pattern (3n-1), where n stands for the possibility of missing tetrahedra in brigde position in the structure. In recent decades, many researchers have used different types of additions in Portland cement searching to modify the porosity, morphology, composition and nanostructure of C-S-H gels in order to improve the durable and strength properties of the starting cement paste. In this PhD thesis the preparation of cement-based materials with additions of nano, microsilica and a mixture of both is carried out, and their morphology and microstructural properties are studied. For this purpose two different anhydrous cements, which basically differ in the average particle size (CEM I 52.5 R and ULTRAVAL), and two methods of incorporating the silica additions in substitution of anhydrous cement have been used. In the first one the additions are added during the mixing process, i.e. the conventional method of incorporating the additions. The second one consists of the dry electrodeposition of additions on anhydrous cement before the mixing process. This method is subject to a patent developed by the Institutito de Cerámica y Vidrio, which belongs to the CSIC...
