Abstract
Polymeric materials have experimented a great evolution in the last decades due to the growing investigations around synthesis of new materials and the progress made in technologies related to its manufacturing. Those circumstances have led to the outcome of a wide range of products that show a great potential in several sectors: packaging (alimentary industry, pharmacy, and chemical products), building, design, shoemaking, textil and, of course, in the Artworks Field This last application ranges from its use in a variety of artistic productions (painting, sculpture, installations, etc.), in preventive conservation or in restoration treatments for Artworks. In relation with its use in preventive conservation, they are regularly used in the ambit of manipulation, exhibition, storage, packaging and transport as fixing, support, and isolation or protection systems. As for the restoration treatments, they are typically used as adhesives, consolidants, coatings and supports. Nevertheless, in general, these materials have not been developed for its specific use in the field of the Conservation and Restoration of Heritage but for other industrial uses. This circumstance brings the need of performing a previous assessment in order to find its composition, properties and long term behavior so as to be able to determine a set of recommendations for its use and establish the compatibility of the material with the work of art. Therefore, it is important to determine the chemical and /or physical modifications that may affect its initial characteristics and functionality and additionally, the possible effects on the artworks they are going to be in contact with. For this objective, it is necessary to perform accelerated aging tests, under the controlled action of several variables as electromagnetic radiation, temperature and the combined action of humidity and temperature. All these followed by its correspondent analysis will allow the determination of possible reaction mechanisms and to study the main resulting degradation components...
