Abstract
Cervical carcinoma is the fourth most common cancer among women as well as the fourth cause of cancer death in women worldwide (266,000 deaths in 2012) and in many less socio-economically developed countries remains the leading cause of death even ahead of breast cancer (1). Cervical cancer is considered a sexually transmitted disease, whose necessary yet insufficient agent is the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) (6,7). The extreme rarity of negative HPV cervical cancer reinforces the need to determine it during all routine screenings in addition to cervical cytology (6). However, not all HPV generated infections progress and develop a malignancy, besides other associated factors are many times required to develop the disease (age, parity, socio-economic level, sexual behaviour, genetic factors, smoking, immunosuppression, contraceptives and coinfections) (12-29). At present, the standard treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) is concurrent radiochemotherapy since it has managed to improve survival rates (80- 84,118,120). Nevertheless, around one third of patients will suffer a relapse of the disease within the first 2-3 years after completing treatment; so there is speculation the tumours may possibly have a different molecular biology with more or less aggressiveness and/or refractoriness to treatment. This would explain why some patients with similar tumoral stages and clinical characteristics respond differently to standard treatment...
