Abstract
Este artículo estudia la inscripción fundacional del monasterio cisterciense de Nuestra Señora de Monsalud para determinar su tradición y esclarecer si es un falso, una copia o un original tardío. Analiza, en primer lugar, los argumentos históricos utilizados hasta ahora para calificar a la inscripción de falsa. A continuación, los datos puramente epigráficos, referentes especialmente a los formulismos utilizados. Concluye señalando la vinculación existente entre la tradición de Monsalud, el tumbo viejo, la historia del padre Cartes, cronista del monasterio, y la propia inscripción.
This article examines the foundation inscription of the Cistercian monastery of Nuestra Señora de Monsalud in order to determine its heritage and identify whether it is a fake, a copy or a late original. First, we explore the historical arguments usually adduced to determine whether an epigraph is a fake. Then, we examine purely epigraphic data, and particularly the formulae used. We conclude by noting the links between the heritage of Monsalud, the monastery’s old Diplomatic Codex, the old tomb, the story of Father Cartes (the chronicler of the monastery), and the inscription itself.
