Abstract
Throughout this PhD Thesis I have performed a detailed computational study of the H2 + H2 system (including both the H2 + H2 and the H2 + D2 reactions)using quasiclassical trajectories (QCT) on the BKMP Potential Energy Surface (PES) by Boothroyd et al. [37]. In order to carry out such calculations, I have modified the VENUS code and also have written programs for the analysis of the data. I have also developed and implemented a new method to elucidate when the collision event takes place, that is, the actual transition state for a given trajectory. Under such conditions, it is possible to calculate the vector correlations between the internuclear axes and the intermolecular axis at the transition state which is equivalent to determine the preferred geometry of the various channels of the reaction. This new method sheds some light onto the intimate reaction mechanism as a function of the product channel and the initial reaction conditions. Previous computational studies on the H2 +H2 reactions can be classified according to: 1. Computational method; that is, Quantum Mechanical (QM) or QCT. 2. Degrees of freedom: Full dimension (FD) or reduced-dimensionality systems. Both QCT and QM methods solve the Schrödinger equation for the electronic motion. However, while in QCT calculations the nuclei motion is described according to the classical movement laws, in the QM methods, the nuclei are also treated as quantum particles. Hence, the former approach constitutes a crude approximation to QM methods which are computationally very expensive and restricted to systems with few degrees of freedom. In many cases (although not always!) the agreement between QCT and QM methods is excellent. Due to its importance in astrochemistry and to its apparent simplicity (4 protons and 4 electrons), the H2 + H2 is a benchmark system for the study of polyatomic reactions...
