Abstract
This work analyses the effects of the spatial-semantic and typicality factors on classification behaviour, and on the class inclusion relation, with children of different ages. In Experiment I, the results show, on one hand, that most of the children, from six-year-old onwards, are inclined to build up collections, rather than a categorization of the presented material through taxonomic criteria; and, on the other, that children's success improves noticeably within the inclusion tests when they are posed in the collection condition, in this case, the role of functionality being irrelevant. Data from Experiment II ratify the importance of the spatial-semantic factors, while the typicality effects are shown quite clearly in the classificatory behaviours but not in the class inclusion tests.
