Abstract
El siglo XIX británico, su producción literaria, fue interesante para la crítica ochocentista, la crítica que daba cuenta de ella, de esa producción, en su momento histórico, siguió siendo interesante durante el siglo XX y sigue siéndolo en el siglo XXI. La literatura victoriana se ha examinado desde todos los puntos de vista imaginables. Los autores más leídos en su momento, Dickens o George Eliot, por ejemplo, han seguido ocupando de forma sostenida la atención de la crítica. Se ha estudiado a los autores menos leídos, Samuel Butler o Edwin A. Abbott, pero no han tenido tanta fortuna, o fortuna parecida, ciertos autores que representaron a un amplio sector del público lector, como Ouida o Mrs. Gaskell, autoras de obras que dejaron de interesar a un público mayoritario y, por tanto, han recibido un nivel de atención crítica relativamente modesto o, incluso, nulo. En los estudios históricos es interesante estudiar las irregularidades no menos que las regularidades, la regla y su contravención, los procesos continuos, las repeticiones y las ausencias y las rupturas. Hubo autores que apenas despertaron el interés del público o de la crítica en su momento, pero fueron autores a los que, posteriormente, cierta idea de la modernidad convirtió en autores de culto entre los lectores, William Blake o Gerard Manley Hopkins son un ejemplo de ello...
English nineteenth century was an important literary period and this was reflected on the critical heritage of the age and of the next two centuries. Victorian literature has been studied from every point of view. The greatest authors of the nineteenth century, like Dickens and George Eliot, are still important for critics nowadays. The case of Minor authors’ case is different. Some of them, like Samuel Butler and Edwin A. Abbot, have been studied too through the centuries but others, like Ouida or Mrs. Gaskell, who were very famous and important on their own time, but somewhere in the history of literature stopped being important for readers and critics, have scarcely been interesting for critics. It is interesting to pay attention, within the historical studies, not only to the regularities but also to the irregularities and the same happens with repetitions and the processes which follow a continuum. For example, in addition to what has been said, there were authors who did not have the attention of their contemporary readers but following critical ideas made them important authors, this was the case of William Blake and Gerard Manley Hopkins...
