Abstract
Camelids are raised in Peru in high altitude areas, where other species have enormous difficulties to survive. One of them, the alpaca, due to its interesting fiber characteristics, meat and by-products is well adapted to this environment, allowing a good economic performance. As a result of the efforts from small producers, researchers, and especially the final consumer, alpaca products are becoming increasingly popular among consumers of natural products, including fiber. Pacomarca is an experimental farm pioneered on the implementation of a breeding program for alpacas in Peru based on breeding values. Pacomarca has also developed his own software through which the worldwide largest alpaca performance dataset has been generated. Registration started since 1999 up to the present. This dataset has been extremely useful to generate information published in scientific journals, part of which has given rise to this Doctoral Thesis. All analyses in this Doctoral Thesis have been carried out independently for the two involved varieties, Huacaya and Suri. The first work was focused on estimating the genetic parameters of six reproductive traits and assessing their genetic correlation with fiber quality and morphological traits. Taking into account all the involved traits, 156,276 records of 7,742 animals were used, with 122,909 belonging to Huacaya animals and 33,367 of Suri ones. The reproductive traits were the age at first service, age at first calving, copulation time, pregnancy diagnosis, gestation length and calving interval. The results showed low heritabilities, respectively for Huacaya and Suri, of 0.19 and 0.09 for age at first service, 0.04 and 0.05 for copulation time, 0.07 and 0.05 for the pregnancy diagnosis, and 0.12 and 0.20 for gestation length...
