Abstract
El presente estudio tiene por objeto llevar a cabo una relectura de la obra de Franz Kafka con el fin de elaborar una definición propia de lo kafkiano, proponiendo la prevalencia de sus fundamentos en el transcurso del tiempo y especialmente en novelas de nuestros días. Como paradigmas de la propuesta, se plantea dos títulos de sendos autores, a saber, Vida y época de Michael K de John Maxwell Coetzee y Dossier K. de Imre Kertész. Aunque ambos son en apariencia muy diferentes entre sí, comparten referencias directas a Kafka. Kafkiano es un término ya recogido en el diccionario de la Real Academia Española y que empleamos de forma habitual como sinónimo de angustioso. Puede explicarse este hecho sobre la base de que vemos el mundo del autor reflejado en el nuestro. Sin embargo, en este estudio se aspira a definir más detalladamente y en profundidad esa angustia, tanto en términos de contenido como de construcción de las obras y estilo. The main purpose of this study is to conduct a re-reading of the works of Franz Kafka in order to elaborate a personal definition of 'Kafkaesque'. Thus, it is proposed the prevalence of its foundations in the course of time and especially in contemporary novels. As paradigms of the proposal, there will be two titles of respective authors, namely Life & Times of Michael K, written by John Maxwell Coetzee and Dossier K., by Imre Kertesz. Although both of them are apparently very dissimilar from each other, they share direct references to Kafka. As it will be seen, once the careful reading is started, the common relationship with that special element we call Kafkaesque results clearer. Precisely, this one (Kafkaesque) is a term already present in the dictionary created by the Royal Spanish Academy. According to it, we use regularly 'Kafkaesque' as a synonym for 'distressing' or 'agonizing'. This fact can be explained on the basis of a shared perception of the author's world reflected in ours. However, in this study it is aimed to define in more detail and depth that 'distress' and 'agony' in terms of contents, structure of the work and style. The aim therefore is to reach the core that justifies the use of 'Kafkaesque' by employing solid analysis tools. This will be the basis of an initial overview to be followed by its application to the work of two other contemporary writers: Coetzee and Kertész. They, a South African and a Hungarian, are so geographically and culturally distant. Nevertheless, it does not hinder the common denominator of their Kafkaesque sensitivity. This reality will hopefully prove our hypothesis and thus underscore that the 'Kafkaesque angst' is a feature of our modern world...
