Abstract
Sculptures of great dimensions, as this cast of the Diadumenos - copy of which is kept in the Prado National Museum - belonging to the Gipsoteca of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UCM, are often constructed, for ease of transport, through parts that are attached with different assembly systems. However, the fragility of gypsum as material, the use of the sculptures for teaching, as well as inadequate preservation conditions produce deterioration and fractures in assemblies that thus lose their functionality. A research team under the framework of a project for innovation and improvement of the teaching quality of the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, formed by conservators and sculptors, under the framework of a project for innovation and improvement of the teaching quality, has developed two videos showing the methodologies of intervention for the reconstruction through molding of the original broken assembies. VÍDEO 1: Reconstruction through molding of the arm assembly (male) of the Diadumeno plaster cast belonging to the Gipsoteca of the UCM raises methodologies for the reconstruction through molding of the arm assembly (male) of the Diadumeno plaster cast who had lost the insertion pin. In this way, the materials and methodologies used to obtain this tenon are detailed, such as the thickening of the wire structure by the use of epoxy resin mortar and mineral fillers, or the reconstruction of the spike (male) by molding with plaster mortar and acrylic resin, thus achieving the proper fit and functionality of the original assembly. In this way, the materials and methodologies used to obtain this assembly are detailed, such as the filling of the box by using expanded polystyrene pellets and fluid plaster to lighten the weight, or the formulation of the plaster mortar and acrylic resin that by molding will be used for the reconstruction of the box, thus obtaining the proper fit and functionality of the original assembly.
