Abstract
Adequate tooth size is key for normal occlusion and to guarantee a successfuloutcome following orthodontic therapy. Knowledge about tooth size, shape andproportions is important for adequate diagnosis and accurate treatment planning.Dental agenesis, hypodontia or oligodontia are terms which refer to the absenceof the tooth germ due to genetic influence and other related environmental factors whichmay have an effect during the first stages of tooth development.Dental agenesis affects around 20% of the population worldwide, withhypodontia being the most common tooth development anamolies in humans. The prevalence of hypodontia varies depending on the population investigated. When excluding third molars, the frequency of hypodontia ranges between 2,2 and10.1% in the general population. However, in Caucasians this range is narrowed downto 5 to 8%.Numerous studies show a relationship between dental agenesis and reducedmesio-distal tooth width. Therefore, an understanding of tooth size in patients withhypodontia is key to establishing an adequate and accurate treatment plan for thesepatients.Digital models are just as reliable as traditional stoned cast methods. Theadvantages of these techniques include the lower costs, time and space required; theyshould be considered the gold-standard in day-to day practice...
