Abstract
Objectives: 1. To determine the influence of different light sources on the ability to match gingival shade tabs, by using the modified Heraus Kulzer gingival guide. 2. To assess the color difference values that represent the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds of denture teeth. Materials and Methods: 30 students had to match five samples of the coded guides, which were randomly assigned, in a guide ordered by value and another by mixing percentage. Also, they were shown a tablet with 6 pairs of samples of gingival colors to report the degree of perceptibility and acceptability. Both procedures were performed under natural light, conventional fluorescent light, TLD fluorescent light and laboratory fluorescent light. Results: No significant differences were found between the different light sources, but it was found that the guide ordered by percentage of mixture had significantly higher hits. (p = 0.000). The mean color perceptibility threshold which is determined for 50% of observers as 1,7 ∆E* units was significantly lower than the mean color acceptability threshold which is determined for 50% of observers as 2,5 ∆E* units. Conclusions: 1. No statistically significant differences were found between the different light sources and the selection of the gingival color. 2. It seems that as the operator's perceptibility value increases, the acceptability value decreases.
