Abstract
The Summer of 1990 I enjoyed a scholarship from the Mexican government to study the festive rituals implanted by the Spaniards persisting in indigenous communities. The core of my research was the Dance of the Feather of the valleys of Oaxaca (considered "the jewel" of the national folklore), attending several representations, interviewing actors and organizers, and consulting archives and local bibliography. A group of mexican anthropologists was doing an ambitious study on the Dances of Conquest in America, and when learning about my work, I was asked to collaborate in the first part of their project (dedicated to Mexico), which was published in 1996.
