Abstract

La migración ha sido uno de los eventos más importantes en la evolución económica y demográfica de Puerto Rico durante toda su historia. La inserción del proceso migratorio puertorriqueño se ha producido dentro del marco de las relaciones político-coloniales de la Isla con Estados Unidos donde se aprecian dos grandes movimientos migratorios a partir de la postguerra: el primero compuesto principalmente por mano de obra no especializada y semi-especializada, bajos salarios, y poca escolaridad, que se localizó en el noreste y centro de Estados Unidos, principalmente de 1945 a 1980; y el segundo, más reciente, desde 1980 hasta el presente, compuesto por mano de obra cualificada, educada, con dominio del idioma inglés, que se localiza de manera descentralizada, particularmente en los estados del sur y el oeste del país...

This research paper explores the history of the Puerto Rican migration to Houston, Texas during the period of 1950 to 2010. Migration has been one of the most important events in the economic and demographic evolution of Puerto Rico throughout history. The Puerto Rican migration process occurred within the framework of the island’s political relations with the United States. Two large migratory movements from the Post-War Period can be identified; the firstperiod movement was composed primarily by immigrants with workmanship not specialized and semi- specialized careers, low wages, and little schooling. These immigrants were located in the northeastern and central parts of the United States mainly from 1945 to 1980. The second period, was from 1980 to actual times. However, these immigrants were composed of qualified workmanship and migrants who were apparently more educated, and fluent in the English language. These migrants settled in a decentralized manner particularly throughout the States the southern and the western regions of the country...
