Abstract
El consumo abusivo de alcohol conlleva graves consecuencias sociales, económicas y sanitarias, tales como efectos neurotóxicos y consecuencias adversas en diversos órganos. Recientemente, la investigación está estudiando el efecto de esta sustancia sobre diferentes mecanismos epigenéticos como la acetilación de histonas. Estos mecanismos modifican la expresión génica sin alterar la estructura de ADN y surgen como consecuencia de la estimulación ambiental. Ante las graves consecuencias causadas por el alcohol, es necesario disponer de herramientas para la detección de su consumo. Los biomarcadores se presentan como la metodología idónea a este fin. Un biomarcador es una característica medida objetivamente que informa de un determinado proceso biológico, por ejemplo, la intoxicación de alcohol. No obstante, estas herramientas presentan inconvenientes y, dependiendo del biomarcador que utilicemos, vamos a encontrar diferentes limitaciones...
Alcohol abuse results in several social, economic and health consequences, including neurotoxic effects and consequences in several tissues. In addition, during the last years, the research is studying the effect of this substance on different epigenetic mechanisms, such as the histone acetylation. These mechanisms modify the gene expression without altering DNA structure and arise as a result of environmental stimulation. Regarding the serious consequences that alcohol consumption causes, it is necessary to have tools for the detection of this consumption. The biomarkers appear as the most appropriate methodology for analyzing this consumption. A biomarker is an objectively measured characteristic that informs us of a certain biological process, like alcohol intoxication. Nevertheless, the use of these tools has some drawbacks and, depending on the type of biomarker we use, we are going to find several limitations...
