Abstract
La Esclerosis Múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad autoinmune crónica del Sistema Nervioso Central (SNC) que produce inflamación, desmielinización y daño axonal y supone la primera causa de discapacidad en adultos jóvenes en países occidentales. En la primera fase de la enfermedad juega un papel destacado la inmunidad adaptativa. Sin embargo, la enfermedad cambia con la edad: bajan la tasa de brotes, el número de lesiones activas en la sustancia blanca y el número de linfocitos en el SNC; mientras que, paradójicamente aumenta la discapacidad de los pacientes. Además, disminuye la eficacia de los tratamientos actuales, centrados principalmente en frenar la inmunidad adaptativa, y aumenta el riesgo de efectos secundarios graves asociados a estas terapias..
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting the Central Nervous System (CNS) characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal damage, and it is the major cause of disability in young adults in the western countries. In the first phase, the adaptive immunity plays an important role in MS. Aging associates with a reduction of the relapse rate, the number of active lesions in the white matter, and the number of infiltrating lymphocytes within the CNS; although paradoxically patient disability increases. In addition, it is related to a decrease in the efficacy of the current treatments, which are mainly focused on adaptive immunity; and with a greater risk of suffering serious side effects associated with these therapies...
