Abstract
This paper sustains through first-hand sources the hitherto almost unknown vital and creative path of the Caracas-born sculptor, Rafael de la Cova up to 1888. From his plastic production are known his major works (three public monuments consecrated to the glory of the Liberator in Caracas, New York and Ciudad Bolívar, and two big allegorical groups at the “Guzmán Blanco” Theatre, nowadays “Municipal Theatre”), so as other minor pieces in the field of portrait and decoration. His educative activity is expressed by the initiative to create a prívate academy of drawing (“Círculo Artístico”) and his admission as a professor of sculpture at Academia de Bellas Artes.
