Abstract
Tourism has been one of the economic sectors most affected by COVID-19. This paper has analyzed the impact of the pandemic on domestic tourism in Spain using a new Big Data source based on cell phone records. For this purpose, we have analyzed the changes in the distribution of inbound and outbound tourists, their annual percentage variation and with respect to the national average at different scales -mobility area, province and autonomous community- taking two dates in the summer of 2019 and two dates in 2020 with similar characteristics. The results show an unequal decline in the different regions during the summer of 2020 as well as the confirmation of changes in the behavior of tourists, such as the rise of rural tourism compared to urban and "sun and beach" tourism or the commitment to short-distance trips compared to others with more distant destinations. The greater degree of detail provided by this source of data has made it possible to delve deeper into the factors that have caused these changes, such as supra-individual limitations (containment measures and mobility restrictions), economic factors and psychological factors such as the perception of risk.
