Imagen, artista y enfermedad en la creación plástica

Abstract

NOTA 520 8 La Tesis Doctoral, titulada “Imagen, artista y enfermedad en la creación plástica“, tiene como objetivo investigar y establecer la relación entre el arte, - como proceso creativo- y la enfermedad, entendida esta como un factor importante e, incluso, decisivo en la propia configuración de la imagen y de la personalidad del artista. Como punto de partida, se procede a analizar diacrónicamente y con profundidad el concepto de “la leyenda del artista” y la consideración social de la imagen del artista desde la Antigua Grecia hasta la época actual. Una vez establecidos los rasgos que a lo largo de la historia han ido configurado dicho concepto y el papel que ha desempeñado la imagen del artista en la sociedad a lo largo de la historia, se estudia detenidamente el tema de la enfermedad como rasgo integrante de la “leyenda del artista” y su papel importante e, incluso, determinante en el desarrollo de la facultad creativa. También se analiza la importancia del “arte”, de la creatividad artística, como instrumento terapéutico. Tras revisar un número considerable de artistas en los que se hace patente la relación entre proceso creativo y enfermedad, el estudio se centra en analizar la vida y la obra artística de Frida Kahlo, Joseph Beuys y Antonio Saura, como ejemplos muy relevantes de la enorme influencia de la enfermedad en su imagen y en su obra, utilizando sus biografías como fuente principal para el conocimiento no sólo de su trayectoria artística, sino también personal. Esta Tesis Doctoral incluye una detallada selección de imágenes de artistas y de obras artísticas a fin de ilustrar los diferentes temas objeto de estudio
ABSTRACT. The Doctoral Thesis, entitled “Image, artist and illness”, aims to explore the relationship between art - as a creative process - and illness: an important, and even crucial, factor in the shaping of the image and of the artist’s personality. As a starting point, we analyse in depth the concept of the “legend of the artist” as well as the social consideration of the artist´s image from Ancient Greece to the modern era. Once we have established the characteristics that have shaped this concept and the role that the artist´s image has played in society throughout history, we examine at length the notion of disease as an integral characteristic of the “legend of the artist” and its important role in the development of creativity. We also analyse the importance of “art” and creativity as a therapeutic tool. After studying a considerable number of artists in whom there is a clear relationship between the creative process and disease, the dissertation analyses the lives and works of Frida Kahlo, Joseph Beuys and Antonio Saura as relevant examples of where suffering an illness has had an enormous influence on personal image and output. For that purpose, the biographies of these artists have been used as a principal source for the exploration of their personal and professional careers. A comprehensive selection of images of the artists and of their art works is also included in order to illustrate the different themes discussed in this dissertation
