Abstract
[ABSTRACT] In the context of Project Life+ Bioenergy and Fire Prevention it has been generally considered the need for an exhaustive study of the implications of biomass exploitation for the prevention of forest fires in the area called Massif of Caroig in the west of the province of Valencia. The problem for many Mediterranean areas with low growth, steep slope (difficult for mechanization) and scarcity of wood markets is that they are no longer profitable. Biomass could be a commercial alternative for wood surplus in many currently unexploited mountains. It is being discussed in various forums that boosting these forest uses would also mean an improvement in fire prevention by decreasing the existing biomass. The truth is that this assumption is yet to be tested while there are some doubts about how hard should treatments be or whether trees removal would be enough to prevent fires, at least in decreasing the risk of crown fires. Therefore, the use of fire simulators applied to the evaluation of silvicultural treatments can quantify the differences in fire behavior between the current tree mass and the tree mass after applying several silvicultural treatments. The creation of firebreaks by applying the fuzzy logic can help to make performances more flexible since it allows to keep in mind the slope and degrades areas of scrub clearance, which may facilitate their management , reducing visual impacts based on linear buffer designs, such as those established so far. Both the use of fire simulators at landscape scale, in order to implement silvicultural measures for energy purposes to assist in the prevention of forest fires in the studied area, and the firebreak building by fuzzy logic, are pioneering techniques in Spain , according to the literature. The obtained results which come up applying the silvicultural treatments set in the project Life+, are not a significant extent in the affected area and in fire behavior, suggesting that, for fire preventions, actions should be taken at a landscape level changing the fuel models. Building firebreaks using fuzzy logic shows that the estimated area in the fuzzy scenario is significantly smaller than using the linear buffer, which would mean an optimization of resources when running the firebreaks network maintenance making the execution more flexible and minimizing the visual impact.
