Abstract
This thesis is aimed to review, describe and analyse the work by Don Fernando Lázaro Carreter (Zaragoza, 1923-Madrid, 2004) in the fields of criticism and literature. Don Fernando is doubtless one of the leading personalities in the field of culture in twentieth century. Since the beginning of this work, it was clear the need to fill the theoretical void about the work of the critic.To this regard, it is to be noticed the current lack of attention that critics have been paid to the work by Don Fernando. On one hand, it might be that his death is still too close in time; on the other and to some extent, there is little interest in research about critics, or similarly, about the history of criticism. Thus, compared to the compulsory and generalised knowledge about his handbooks, articles and other texts that his colleagues, pupils and students currently have, there is to be found an almost critical silence about his work, except for some brief papers included in the bibliography. This academic reality entails that no other start point could be used than the actual text by Don Fernando Lázaro. Consequently, the conclusion that are drawn hereby could be reviewed and supported by future research, hopefully inspired by this thesis, which is considered a first step into the studies about Lázaro Carreter.In order to attain this systematic analysis, the thesis has been structured into three main parts: the first of them dealing with historical and critical piece of work. This analysis is organized by historical order, thus beginning with the analysis of his papers about medieval literature and closing it his papers on twentieth century literature. In this first part, a specific section is consecrated to his contributions in the field of literature theory as his researches in this field has been ground-breaking and served to introduce this discipline into Spain. Another section is dedicated to his work in the field of didactics due to the weight that secondary school textbooks had in his work.
