Abstract
El presente trabajo versa sobre la relación epistolar que mantuvo el poeta vallisoletano Jorge Guillén (1893-1984) con la profesora estadounidense Katherine Whitmore (1897-1984) amante del escritor Pedro Salinas (1891-1951). Esta relación epistolar, fruto de una amistad desarrollada por más de 40 años, aporta datos interesantes sobre la docencia y la vida del poeta madrileño en la costa Este de Estados Unidos, evidencia los esfuerzos que tanto Guillén como Whitmore llevaron a cabo para proteger la fortuna editorial de Salinas, e incluso, arroja luz sobre la producción literaria del propio Guillén. La edición crítica y anotada y el estudio riguroso de esta correspondencia inédita, desatendida en el archivo de Jorge Guillén de la Biblioteca Nacional de España, aporta a nuestro conocimiento de la producción literaria de los poetas del 27 durante su exilio.
[ABSTRACT] The thesis examines a compendium of letters, which were disregarded and unpublished within Jorge Guillén’s Archive at the Spanish National Library. This exchange of documents is the result of 40 years of friendship between Spanish poet Jorge Guillén (1893-1984) and American professor Katherine Whitmore (1897-1984), the woman who inspired Pedro Salinas’ (1891-1951) love poems. The group of letters provides fundamental information about Pedro Salinas’ life while acting as professor in the United States, his literary work, but most important, his experience as an exiled due to the Spanish Civil War conflict. Moreover, the letters confirm Whitmore and Guillén’s efforts to protect the Madrilenian poet’s editorial fortune. Interestingly enough, it also sheds light on Guillén’s and others exiled literary accomplishments.
