Imagen, imaginación y materia

Abstract

El presente artículo pretende ahondar en el sentido y valor que adoptan las imágenes tecnológicas y mentales en los procesos de creación artística y documental, y de adquisición de conocimiento. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es buscar interrelaciones entre las actividades creativas y científicas fundamentadas en la utilización común de imágenes mentales e imágenes tecnológicas. La participación de las imágenes mentales (representaciones, sueños, fantasía, etc.) y tecnológicas (fundamentalmente fotográficas de sales de plata y electró, fijas y en movimiento), en los procesos de creación artística y documental y de adquisición de conocimiento es una materia de estudio escasamente desarrollada. La búsqueda exhaustiva de pistas esclarecedoras en revistas científicas (Nature, Scientific American and Photographic Science and Engineering, preferentemente) y en bibliografía especializada, ha sido el principal método de investigación de este trabajo. La separación drástica entre ciencias y humanidades desde la matematización progresiva del conocimiento científico a partir del Renacimiento, ha imposibilitado una visión de conjunto de los procesos cognitivos humanos. La imagen, en su doble acepción: mental y técnica, nos brinda la oportunidad de realizar estudios transversales que unifiquen áreas hasta ahora entendidas tan dispares como la epistemología, la estética y la ética. La reivindicación de lo material como fuente de toda imagen y de todo conocimiento, frente al protagonismo extremo otorgado a las construcciones mentales de carácter formal, es la principal conclusión de este trabajo.

[ABSTRACT] This article focuses on the sense and value of technical and mental images in the process of artistic and documentary creativity as well as of knowledge acquisition. The main goal of this research is to look for interrelations between creative and scientific works based on the use of mental and technological images. The participation of mental images (representations, dreams, fantasies, etc.) and technological ones (mainly silver and digital photography and film) in the process of documentary and artistic creations and knowledge acquisition is a poorly investigated subject. A detailed search of scientific magazines (Nature, Scientific American and Photographic Science and Engineering mainly) and specialized bibliographies for revealing clues has been the main research method of this paper. The extreme separation between sciences and humanities due to the progressive mathematization of scientific knowledge since the Reinassance impede us a global vision of human cognitive operations. Image and its double value, as mental and technical, offers us the opportunity of developing transdisciplinary studies which put together areas such as epistemology, aesthetics and ethics. This paper concludes that the material world be considered as the origin of any knowledge or technical image, as opposed to giving priority to formal mental constructions.
