Abstract
Sin lugar a dudas uno de los problemas centrales en la historia del tropo ha sido el de la terminología. Partiendo de los intentos de respuesta más relevantes a esta cuestión (desde una perspectiva puramente histórica, práctica, estética, filológica, musicológica o litúrgica), se plantea la exigencia de definición de “género” en el mundo medieval, a través de la cual se pueda tener una comprensión más profunda de lo que supuso el tropo como fenómeno. Por medio de un análisis multidimensional de algunos ejemplos conservados en manuscritos españoles, se ahondará en el sentido, significado e intencionalidad de los compiladores medievales cuando escribían “tropus” en el encabezamiento de una pieza, así como en los puntos de encuentro y desencuentro con nuestra concepción “moderna” de género.
With no doubt, one of the main problems in the history of the trope has been the present-day terminology. From the most meaningful attempts (which take account of a perspective which can be purely historical, practical, aesthetical, philological, musicological or liturgical), the question of “genre” in the medieval world urges an answer, which may comprehend in a deeper way what the trope as a phenomenon meant in those centuries. The analysis of some samples preserved in Spanish manuscripts will provide more information about the sense, the meaning and the purpose of medieval compilation workers, such as their writing tropus in the heading of an item. This research will also point out different reasons of agreement and disagreement between their medieval conception of genre and our “modern” one.
