Abstract
This thesis investigates the vocal practices of teacher specialists in music education in schools of the Madrid Autonomous Community, through qualitative case study. Being analyzed are the vocal models of the teachers, the strategies with which they teach (or fail to teach) their pupils to sing, and the coherence or contradiction between teacher beliefs and their actions. The work presents an exhaustive bibliographical review of the anatomical and physiological aspects of singing with regard to teaching and learning taking into account the demands of singing on primary education students. The research is empirically based on observations and interviews realized in six primary education schools. The purpose of this thesis arose due to the lack of bibliography on music teaching within the field of general education due to the lack of research applied to the vocal practices of teachers and on how the official curriculum guidelines regarding vocal expression are reflected in classroom practice. The conclusions support the need for suitable vocal training for future music teachers, clearly indicating its benefits and also pointing out the dangers that inadequate vocal training may have for primary education pupils.
