Abstract
El artículo estudia la conveniencia de incluir un programa de educación ético-cívica en el sistema educativo oficial de las actuales democracias occidentales. Para ello se abordan algunas de las principales objeciones que cuestionan su pertinencia: el papel de las familias, el peligro de adoctrinamiento, la falta de univocidad de concepto de educación ciudadana y la división social que generan sus contenidos.
El tratamiento de cada una de estas objeciones lleva a respaldar por la vía negativa la pertinencia de apoyar un modelo de educación cívica que persiga la defensa y reforzamiento de los valores democráticos.
The article examines the appropriateness of including a program of ethical and civic education in the formal education system of current Western democracies. To do so, some of the major objections which question its relevance are discussed: the role of the families, the danger of indoctrination, the lack of uniqueness of the concept of citizenship education and the social division that its contents generate. The treatment of each of these objections leads to supporting instead a model of civic education aimed at the defense and strengthening of democratic values.
