Abstract
This paper investigates the possible origin of the symbolic value of objects, materials and places connected with the predominant religious tradition in the West, Catholicism. In particular, religious relics are one of the greatest material exponents of this tradition. This paper also analyzes the translation of the concept of superstition from religious to artistic context, showing the inheritance of religious beliefs in the art world starting at the incursion of surrealism in the first half of the 20th century. By acknowledging this theory, the development of four major methodological groups has been made possible. They originate from one aspect, the use of materials or witness sites. For example, artifacts pilfered from certain contexts, frequently in conflict, not only recreate a situation or represent a reality, but also establish links between the setting or exhibition space and the viewer. A series of works of political and social nature have been devised from a practical perspective. These works have been exclusively elaborated on while focusing on the different aspects considered in this theoretical framework.
