Abstract
The uses of record files in work units are directly related to their probative and informative values. The archival literature has been thinking about strategies and procedures facilitating record management, preserving, however, these use values. Such studies focus on operations such as evaluation and preservation, aiming at maximum efficiency and effectiveness in organizing record files. However, researches on information retrieval and indexing from the the record management theory have not yet reached the same approach proportion. This conclusion is based on a survey of terms in Archivaria and The American Archivist journals which results are presented in this article. Indexing, having, although, not often been discussed in Archival Science, is often used in information retrieval systems, specially in its current phases. Considering these facts, this article's intention is to show that indexing is an operation of information representation that facilitates record management, since it meets subject information demands of registries and current records from the records uses.
