Abstract
Analyzing the scientific performance of an investigator, theme, subject, knowledge area or country is an essential activity to support and guide scientific institutional or governmental policies. Therefore, it is necessary to have evaluation criteria, which are consistent and reliable in relation to the assessed element performance. Among the impact indicators in the scientific literature, there is the h-index, an evaluation parameter which is considered robust for evaluating simultaneously the aspects related to the production and the impact. However, due to deficiencies which were presented, several variations of this indicator have been developed in order to minimize the raised issues. In this sense, the g-index was observed, a variation of h, which is becoming more known in the evaluation of scientific production. A set of articles has g-index, if g is the highest rank; so, the main articles have together, at least, g2 citations. The objective of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis between the h-index and g-index in order to verify their performances, properties and relationships, as impact indicators in the scientific community. As a research procedure, the 20 most productive authors in the Scientometrics magazine were considered, the 35-year period (1980-2014). For each researcher, the Scopus database presented the total of published articles, the number of citations per paper and the year of publication. From the data gathered, we calculated the indexes h, g and g/h ratio for each investigator. We observed a tendency of the g-index to be 1.76 times greater than the h value. We concluded that both scientific indicators, h and g, are complementary and help to identify authors who have high productivity in a theme, and the g/h ratio is indicated to compare researchers, who have different time of publication. Therefore, it is clear the relevant procedures in measuring scientific impact.
