Abstract
This thesis deals with the generation of safe routes for blind and visuallyimpaired people, the problems involved and every necessary aspect to create them. In this thesis, we will show how similar subjects have been analyzed in different studies before. However, none of these studies has prevailed as a standard in this field. As a result, we consider it is still necessary to investigate into this matter. To carry out our investigation, we study the existing systems and make a survey on the technologies we might need to reach our goal. This study includes an important social aspect. Therefore, our relations with the target of the investigation have been very close thanks to a poll we have prepared, which has provided highly useful information on the subject. Furthermore, a series of field tests have been carried out to assess various aspects. The information gathered from tests and polls has been then used to design a methodology to collect information on urban areas, according to users’preferences. Besides, different ways to show various topologies or possible obstacles have been developed, and some metrics have been established that are easy to customize according to the needs of the users in order to calculate the safest possible routes logically. Finally, an application prototype has been developed, which shows that the implementation of the model described in theory is feasible. Moreover, we show how this application was adapted to generate a comprehensive test bench aimed at validating the results gathered through the metrics created, compared to a system using metrics only based on the distance covered.
