Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most relevant and characteristic pathogen in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The lung colonization/infection by this microorganism might be differenced in three stages: initial colonization, intermittent colonization, and chronic colonization. It is important to remark that the first colonization concept included the first positive culture for P. aeruginosa, but also the reemergence of a positive culture after a year of eradication treatment. The colonization-infection with P. aeruginosa has an enormous relevancy in the evolution and prognosis of patients with CF, both prevention and treatment of infections are critical. The most important objective is to prevent chronic colonization by P. aeruginosa. The certainty that an aggressive antibiotic treatment at the moment of the first isolation of P. aeruginosa is crucial to prevent or delay chronic colonization has increased the importance and need for rapid and sensitive techniques for detection, such as detection of P. aeruginosa of respiratory samples for PCR...
