Abstract
The matter discussed in this article doesn’t have a clear resolution, it has become an object of controversy among the specialists. The matter has not been concreted, it seems to be left behind because of its impossibility. The subject discussed in this investigation is the religious possibilities of the hominids previous to the Homo sapiens sapiens. In order to properly face this difficult matter, it will be proposed an appropriated methodology, but previously, the problematic and the different possibilities that our study embraces, will be analyzed. Once reviewed the main specialists that have addressed this issue and analyzed the essence of the object of study (the concept of religion) and the possibilities of the archaeological record, it is concluded that it is impossible to analyze the religious possibilities of these communities. Therefore, the study will be focused on the symbolic activity, as a traceable element through registers (archeological and paleontological) which shows us the entry to the ethereal world of religious behavior. Finally, having a decided methodology, based on the symbolic activities samples and on the cognitive evolution, the article will investigate the archeological register in order to analyze the material samples associated to the homo erectus (since it is the first hominid which its position on the Evolutionary tree of the Hominoidea hasn’t been discussed), to the Homo heidelbergensis and to the Homo neanderthalensis. Using this methodology it will be possible to reject the existing theory, this archaic approach suggests the Homo sapiens sapiens as the only symbolical animal, an animal focused towards the transcendence by divine grace. With this purpose, this essay provides evidences of a gradual and phased evolution of symbolism in our evolutionary history.
