Abstract
Coaching is a phenomenon that has spread over organizations, especially in business. It has become a business worth a lot of money through consultants and external collaborators (“freelance”). We define coaching as a series of conversations and exercises between two mentally healthy people, coach and coachee, which aims to raise the professional potential of the coachee, accompanying him in achieving their career goals. The thesis is focused on the executive and individual coaching. We have worked with professionals who are responsible for teams or major projects for their companies and have taken part in processes of individual coaching. We have not worked on group coaching, since it is difficult to find companies that have implemented it and due to the great differences among the authors in concepts, process and even approach. The methodology used has been qualitative within the framework of the Descriptive Fundamented Theory and Constructionism as theoretical base. A quantitative methodology, specially by conducting surveys, was discarded, since the terminology of coaching is not stable, and various authors and schools differ in concepts. Those nuances could be tackled with interviews, but not with surveys. Ten coaches and ten coachees from different companies have been interviewed. The interviews have been transcribed, and work has been done by searching concepts and group concepts that could lead to finding conclusions about the experience of coaches and coachees. Work has also been done from the experience of the thesis student who is a professional coach, in dialogue with the contributions of the interviews. In the first part of the thesis, we conducted an investigation of the theoretical foundations of coaching through fundamental books on the subject. We performed a study of the different definitions of coaching to find the commonalities and differences in them. We note the causes which, in our opinion, have facilitated the spread of coaching in organizations and especially in business. We also delved into the historical definitions of those philosophers who are identified as background for current coaches. In this first part, we studied the coaching connections with other theories and therapies such as constructionism, family or brief therapy, and theories based on story telling. This first part was presented as research for the Diploma of Advanced Studies...
