Abstract
Admission of the premature infant to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) means being exposed to a series of painful and stressful stimuli for which it is not prepared. These stimuli can have a negative impact on neurodevelopment. Certain kinds of care applied to the infant and family seem to improve the prognosis of these children. Developmental care (DC) was designed with the specific purpose of introducing interventions that would positively modify the setting of the NICU, thereby minimizing the stress experienced by the premature infant. The implementation of individualized care, based on observation of the newborn's behaviour, seems an even more effective way of improving prognosis. For this purpose the standardized program of personalized care called NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program) was established. The implementation of this type of care in NICUs, especially the NIDCAP, requires significant effort from all professionals involved. There are very few studies exploring staff perceptions of NIDCAP during its introduction, nor on the requirements and perceived barriers or obstacles when applying this type of care. Taking these aspects into account could help to optimize the implementation process...
