Abstract
This research aims to conduct a study of dance Contact Improvisation (hereinafter CI) taking into account artistic background, and to consider the educational visions of contacters (people practicing Contact Improvisation dance), motivated by a desire to find new ways to help the development of a more comprehensive education based on processes that are different to the standard, using art forms to advocate and promote freedom, sensitivity and communication; unlike formal education, where an element of repression, authoritarianism, alienation and lack of individual freedom can be detected. According to the testimony of various authors, educators and artists, there is a social change occurring, and therefore it is thought that we must consider an educational change, a regeneration of learning, where more space may be given to the development of non-cognitive skills (which bring success), play (which develops the “executive function”, including the ability to self-regulate, monitor and understand emotions and then adjust accordingly), and social values such as respect, honesty, compassion and dignity. If we ask which art form all the qualities mentioned above can be attributed to in order to consider the possibility of using it as an educational tool, we can state, via thorough investigation of the practice of CI and testimonies of contacters, that this dance contains them. CI is an enveloping movement system initiated in 1972 by the American choreographer Steve Paxton. An improvised dance based on the communication between two bodies that are in physical contact, combining the relationship with the physical laws that govern motion - gravity, momentum and inertia. The practice of CI develops, among others, issues such as emotional awareness, empathy, cooperation, flow; the development of perception or communication of the individual in relation to their environment...
