Abstract
Esta tesis doctoral es un viaje por la cultura, la filosofía, la espiritualidad y sobre todo por la cosmogonía de los indios de Canadá. En el Ministerio de Asuntos Indios en (Ottawa) Canadá, tuve la ocasión de entrevistarme con el jefe de la tribu de los Micmac, Evan Pritchard, y hacerle preguntas sobre la cosmogonía y otros aspectos de la vida y las costumbres de los indios durante más de dos horas. Además me invitó a participar en la ceremonia de la salida del sol, donde una vez purificados por medio del humo que se desprendía del cedro quemado, entonamos unos cánticos a los cuatro puntos cardinales dando las gracias al sol por darnos la vida, ayudar a crecer las plantas, los frutos…En el capítulo V reproduzco la entrevista que mantuve con él tal y como fue y después la traduzco al español. Los indios de América nos sirven de ejemplo para comprender el sentido de la naturaleza, para descubrir nuestro ser natural y luchar para conservarlo, tanto para nosotros como para nuestros hijos. Nuestra filosofía, a diferencia del concepto de los indios, no alcanza a soñar la plenitud del universo que ellos poseen. Para entender su sistema de vida es imprescindible identificar la posición de los objetos y la localización de su campamento en relación con un río, lago o montaña. Los indios acostumbran a observar la topografía en detalle, pues los cazadores narran sus relatos o aventuras sin omitir ningún dato geográfico o topográfico. El indio, acostumbrado desde pequeño a escuchar historias, identifica con facilidad lugares donde nunca había estado. Los nativos americanos, siguiendo el paso del tiempo de los indios, siguen todavía conectados con el mundo que se nutre de mitología. Un poder misterioso pero real que se encuentra en la naturaleza; en las montañas, en los ríos, en las rocas e incluso en los guijarros. Los blancos pueden considerarlos objetos inanimados, pero para los indios ellos se encuentran inmersos en la red del universo, llenos de vida y potentes en medicina. El mundo mítico se encuentra en una etapa más fluida y fluctuante que nuestro propio mundo teórico. El mundo de los mitos es un mundo dramático, un mundo de acciones, de fuerzas y de poderes conflictivos. Más que unidades completas, son a menudo episodios incompletos en una progresión que se remonta a las tradiciones de una tribu...

This PH. D thesis called The Cosmogony Through the Legends and Myths of Canadian Natives, is divided into 7 chapters of varying length that deal with the study of cosmogony in its most relevant aspects and culture of Canadian natives. The titles of chapters in order of appearance are as follows: Cosmogony, The Creation of Healing Powers, The Invention of positive things for survival, The Belief in Psychological Powers, Celebrations, The Oral Tradition in Tales and the Semiotic Analysis of Creation tales according to different Canadian tribes. From these innumerable tales flowing from the different tribes that compose the literature of Canadian natives, I have chosen those that I found the most representative for the topic of my thesis. The titles are the following and are studied in this order: The History of Mik'maq Creation,The Origin of Tides, The Origin of the Medicine Lodge (Scarface), Stories of "The Elder", Blackfoot Genesis, Tale of the Blackfoot about the World Genealogy, Tale about the Origin of the Buffalo Dance, The Origin of Life, The Woman who chooses Death, The Creation, The Strange Origin of Corn, and Who was Given the Fire? Many of these tales center on the creative narrative, generally symbolized by an animal such as a buffalo or a coyote. Their Creator started placing living creatures in order of preference, in the first place the animals, then the plants and trees and at last the man and the woman. In all the tales I have analysed, the woman does not follow the instructions of the Creator which lead to humanity’s mortality. The creator sometimes appears as a close character but as regards to following the rules he is relentless. Where the Creator is not omniscient. He does not know where each creature ought to live, nor how they will harness fire. He learns though his mistakes, sympathizing with the reader. The previously mentioned tales have to do with cosmogony but I have also analysed other tales that give an explanation to the origin of things such as: the medicine lodge, the origin of fire or how to grow corn...
