Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to reveal the role of a human figure in its action as a wayfarer, in the context of landscape paintings done by zen monk Shitao, also known as Yuanji Shih T’ao (1642-1707). A methodological departure was my previous approach to Shitao’s work entitled: "Zen art: contrast between emptiness and fullness", (DEA) carried out for the Institute of Religious Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid which approaches the work of this author. At first glance in this study it is very common to discover people represented somewhere in the landscape in Shitao’s scrolls; they stand drawn as small parts integrated in a more complex composition, full of natural details: all of this creates harmonious and pleasant landscapes in Shitao compositions. Shitao is not trying to illustrate the individual as such; rather, he paints the individual as a universal natural element. With a synthetic drawing he represents the individual ageless, genderless; his figures express the universal "human" and are mystical and pictorial illustration of the author’s hermit spirit. The "individual-walking’s image" is frequently used by the monks painters as a metaphor for the “Tao”. To bring in a hermit spirit means to live in a detached state of mind; so it is very interesting to observe this kind of figures because these relate directly to Ch'an Buddhist and Taoist long-established schools of thought. On the other hand, Taoist and Buddhist Art moves away from literal interpretation of reality, that is: It does not copy it. The artist, remains in a state of “no-mind” so he can carry out his work. Maintaining this condition requires the practice of meditation and contemplation. Shitao’s pictorial method used in his scrolls is an antique Chinese fast technique now called "Sumi-e". The “Holistic Brushstroke” is the method he favored because it is performed in a meditative state. By this, the essence of spiritual encounter between the individual and nature is captured and incorporated into the paper. Thus, the spiritual Silence is integrated into the artwork and with it the Ineffable is expressed...
