Abstract
The existence of malignant tumors is a common thing in our society that has been growing at an exponential rate due to factors related to its prevalence. Some of them are closely linked to nutrition, and its presence or absence in the ingestion and in people’s day-to-day life is nowadays worthy of examination. That is why, and although thanks to chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery patients have raised their life expectancy, we want to promote the improvement of a healthy diet before the appearance of the illness, and once diagnosed, try helping to improve symptoms that suffer and lessen their quality of life from the moment of the diagnosis. The aim of this proposed program is that all secondary effects arisen, not only because of the treatments followed but also due to the illness itself and to its progress, are as compatible as possible with an ordinary life, and in relation to diet, and in order for the eating moment not to become another extra problem in the process. The usefulness of a program with such characteristics is always demonstrated in clinical practice with the aim of reverting weight, the most used method for cachexia screening and implemented since the moment of the diagnosis with the objective of maintaining it, at least, and during the time the patient is receiving treatment. That is why we proposed a comprehensive program in which we help patients and their families improve nutrition during the stay time in the cycles of treatment sick people receive and how to benefit thanks to the implementation of an upgrade in their habits of eating in order to revert the existence of any bad praxis, in case it does exist. The program consisted of selecting patients who on a voluntary basis want to participate and who went to the external consultations of Hospital Universitario de la Princesa Radiotherapy Service. We realized them the Nutritional Screening and after that the Subjective Global Valuation in its modality generated by the patient (VGS-gp). Thanks to these two tools, together with the anthropometric consisting on Size, Weight, BMI, mid upper arm circumference, Triceps skinfold and bioimpedance via bascule Tanita we obtained a much more complete profile of the basal situation of the patient. We also realized an analysis also basal and a record of the patients what had been eating to know the habits from which we start. With all of this we started working according to the possible symptomatology that the patient was going to present assessing the treatment to receive and the complications added depending on the location of the tumor...
