Abstract
The importance of women's presence in the media goes beyond an equal perspective. It's crucial not only from an equality point of view but also because they help to define the reality and the opinion which is delivered through the mass media. The incidence of the double crisis which mass media and news companies have suffered, the more general economic and the specific one to the sector, has had a significant impact in the journalism sector, women in particular in a quantitative and qualitative way. Furthermore, the reduction of newsrooms and the increased workload have had an adverse effect on the balance between work and family given women usually take care of their families. With the crisis, not only the number of media companies has decreased but also lots of changes have taken place in them such as different hiring strategies, different approaches on how to exercise the profession of journalism, different working and pay conditions; and all of this has had a different reading according to sex. The main topic of this doctoral dissertation is confined to the development of journalism practice, with a special emphasis on women journalists, and the conditions that surround its implementation. The subject matter and purpose remains on the study of how the economic crisis has affected the media companies during the worst period, from 2013 to 2008, and further analyze how this has had an impact on women in media companies and women as journalists. For this purpose this research is mainly focused on 4 aspects, all of them analyzed from a gender approach. These four areas being the media companies, journalists, their academic training, and the assessment and solutions provided from professionals and Unions.
