Abstract
llness and the search for health are issues which accompany human beings throughout their lives. Sickness has always been feared by people. Its study has become essential in order to understand its aetiology, its symptomatology and the application of a curative process and also in order to come closer to the society, the economy, the politics and the culture of a town. On the other hand, illness is only understandable in a concrete context. This is a recurring theme in my investigation.1. CHOICE OF THEME: The theme of society and health has always interested me for various reasons: - For its universality, given that, in one moment or other of their lives, illness affects everyone. - For its exceptional nature, given that sickness is inevitable within social normality, it breaks it up, it upsets it, it conditions it, it subdues it... - For its prevention, given that care and prophylactic measures have to be institutionalised so that the sickness is localised and does not spread. The sociology of medicine deals with topics such as the recruitment and origin of doctors, their practices, training, relations with other professionals, medical organizations and the politics of health. From the sociological point of view, what will be analysed is the impact of the illnesses on the life of the group rather than the identity of an illness in particular. This will be the object of this investigation. But I will also deal with aspects related to sociology in medicine, presenting a social aetiology and ecology of the sickness and also with attitudes and behaviours regarding the absence of health caused by poliomyelitis. This is an interdisciplinary topic as four big elements interact within it: the study of the poliomyelitis patient, in a specific geographical field, in a specific historical moment and in a specific public newspaper. By studying institutional sources we can see the possible changes brought about in societies in time. Poliomyelitis has a direct impact on society and its consequences can be seen, recognised and suffered in individuals. This doctoral thesis on poliomyelitis as dealt with in the Gijón newspaper Voluntad is based on the necessity to study the disease in a local context. In order to do this, a medical, social and journalistic analysis has been carried out. This analysis, both quantitative and qualitative, of news items, advertisements and propaganda has been made of this disease in a concrete period of time in a specific city from 1950 to 1970. The thesis is, therefore, justifiable on two accounts. On the one hand, it is the forming of a theoretical framework -as complete as possible -of the characteristics of medical journalism written in the mid-twentieth century about a disease. Apart from leaving victims, this disease was the cause of huge consequences which could not be forgotten by society throughout the individuals’ life. On the other hand, it offers a detailed study of the treatment and the content of what is published in the local Gijón newspaper. This thesis hopes to bring to light new data concerning this type of journalistic information. There are not many investigations which study the medical health indoctrination of the population through the newspapers. In comparison many are the studies which have been made in other areas of the news (culture, sports, tribunals, economy, events...)...
