Abstract
Transition metal oxides are the basis of a great number of functional materials which employed in information, transport and communication technologies. It is known that small variations in the chemical composition could give rise to significant modifications in functional properties. Some of these structures have high oxygen mobility and also the ability of create anionic vacancies. These constitute the origin of new strategies which modify and improve the functional behavior of these materials. The possibility of ion migration that these metal oxides allow, have special relevancy in perovskite related oxides. These characteristics are being used in many devices that are now present in our daily life as catalysts and anionic conductors. Mixed oxides showing the perovskite structural type (ABO3) constitute one of the most studied functional materials family throughout the last years, due to the high number of physical and chemical properties these materials present. Recently, these oxides have been widely used as catalysts in polluting oxides removal. Our main objective is devoted to establish the relationship between catalytic properties and the B cation oxidation state also related to the occupation of the anionic lattice. With this aim in mind, several synthetics routes have been developed in order to synthesize materials with small particle size and suitable specific surface, both properties desirable for obtaining excellent catalysts. Besides, a deep structural characterization has been performed in order to study the mechanism responsible for the catalytic behavior. This has been possible by the information that provides the new advanced electron microscopy techniques, using aberration correctors, new emission sources and novel spectrometers. These techniques have allowed, at the same time, structural and spectroscopic images with sub-Angstrom resolution...
