Abstract
In the field of nominal morphosyntax, traditional approaches to the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European have operated by reconstructing first the set of morphological cases for every declensional type and then by trying to establish the meaning of the different cases, regardless of the specific ending that was used in each declensional type. The Instrumental case has been traditionally reconstructed for all declensional types in Proto-Indo-European. For example, in the athematic declension, *-(e)h1 has been reconstructed for the singular and *-bhi(-) for the plural, while - and - have been reconstructed in the thematic declension. The aim of this research will not be to determine the meaning of the Instrumental case as a whole, but to elucidate what semantic role(s) the *-bhi ending could be employed for and, to the extent possible, how those semantic roles relate to each other in historical terms. In this dissertation, I have examined the reflexes and derivatives of the *-bhi ending in the nominal inflection of Classical Armenian, Greek (Mycenaean, Homeric, some later authors and the epigraphy of the 1st millennium B.C.), Celtic (Gaulish and Old Irish), Iranian (Old Persian and Avestan) and Vedic. The theoretical approach of this investigation takes into account Functional Grammar. According to this approach, language is structured in three levels: syntactic, semantic and pragmatic. These are all related one another. At the semantic level, every component plays a semantic role. Those roles are flexible categories. Related to the flexibility of the Semantic Roles we can find the semantic change, which can be defined as a process that occurs in languages and that affects to any element with a meaning. An important tool used in this Thesis is the semantic map, which is described as a method to represent and explain the relationship between linguistics units, meanings and functions, and the multifunctionality of grammatical morphemes. It is supposed that a semantic map with the semantic roles showed in it is universal. For the purpose of this research, the semantic map of the domain Instrument - Companion, designed by H. Narrog1331 has been used...
