Abstract
The research presented focuses on whether a preventive methodology, based on cognitive processing and Construction Grammar (CNG), can improve the acquisition of restrictive relative clauses in Chinese students learning Spanish as a foreign language at level A2. Specifically, this work aims to determine if that methodology can prevent negative transfer from the Chinese language, which produces fosilizable mistakes. The theoretical framework is a combination of CNG and the cognitive processing of relative clauses. Moreover, the topic is related to Focus on Form, specifically, it discusses the method to guide learnerś attentional resources to the relationship between form and meaning, which is based on: • input enhancement to activate general domain processes: geometric, mathematics, kinesics, chromatic and musical metaphors; • the research on relative clauses and pronouns salience and the gradation of contents based on relative clauses cognitive processing in Chinese and in Spanish. To test this hypothesis an experiment with two groups of Chinese level A2 students (n=74) was performed. One of the groups was comprised of students that had language learning difficulties and slow progression whereas the other group had superior language learning skills and as such a faster progression. They all completed an exam on relative clauses, including writing descriptive texts, joining phrases and multiple choice exercises. Five months later, the group with difficulties was taught relative clauses using the construction methodology, while the advanced group was taught using communicative textbooks. Another three weeks later both groups repeated the same exam from the beginning of the course. The data obtained shows that construction methodology results in: • A statistically significant reduction of the fossilizable mistakes that Chinese students make when they produce subject, object and locative relative clauses in Spanish: they eliminate resumptive nouns from the subordinate phrase, they start using hypotactic phrases instead of coordination and juxtaposition, they stop omitting the pronoun, they improve topicalization, and they start choosing the right relative pronoun. The advanced group did not exhibit statistically significant improvements. • A statistically significant improvement forming correct subject, object and locative relative clauses. The methodology also improves the speed of general syntagmatic general knowledge. The fast group did not improve. • The struggling students significantly achieve the results the good students obtained. They also obtained better results (but not statistically at 95%) in all tasks: descriptive writing, gathering phrases and multiple choice questions related to syntagmatic general knowledge.
