Abstract
Forensic Anthropology is a discipline within Physic Anthropology in biological science. Human identification is a fundamental element of forensic anthropology. To carry out this process properly, the forensic anthropologist must provide pertinent authorities with details about the biological profile of the human remains being studied, as well as some characteristics specific to them. Sex estimation is one of the most important parameters of the biological profile. The testimony of the expert is extremely important It is very important the testimony of the expert in forensic anthropology to be accurate in sex estimation because it can determine the research output. When a complete skeleton is available, the sex assessment is based on the morphology of the cranium and the pelvis. However, sometimes, human remains can be poorly preserved or in bad conditions, which can difficult the task of the forensic anthropologist. In these cases, it is recommended to perform an estimation of sex on the basis of the dimension of the bones. It is very important that the expert has access to previous research on the sex estimation of the population being studied. There is software called FORDISC 3.0 that is meant to be a useful tool for the estimation of two parameters of the biological profile: sex and ancestry. However, it has been developed for the study of the American population, and it has never been tested in Europe or used for the study of the contemporary Spanish population, and this is the reason why an osteometric study has been carried out for the Collection of Identified Skeletons at the School of Legal and Forensic Medicine of Madrid. The hypothesis of the study is twofold. On the one hand, the present research improves the estimation of sex thanks to updated the discriminant functions for the analysis of the Spanish population, taking into consideration the secular change produced during the twentieth century. On the other hand, this research provides previously unknown data related to the estimation of ancestry using the software FORDISC 3.0...
