Abstract
This work arises from our own experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language at the University of Belgrade, Serbia in the third and fourth year of the Degree in Spanish Studies. After having spent more than five years trying to explain the Spanish verbal system from an exclusively grammatical approach, we were entrusted the subject of inverse translation (from Serbian to Spanish). It has constituted greater achievements in verbal tenses teaching if we compare it to previous attempts. This is the main reason why this thesis is trying to justify and optimize the use of inverse translation as a teaching-learning tool of the Spanish verbal system for Serbian students. We are not trying to predict the errors made in the learning process based on a priori contrastive analysis of the Spanish and Serbian system (what it is known as the strong version of the contrastive analysis hypothesis). However, we are following the opposite path, we know the mistakes our students make (by daily observation) and we try to explain and correct them, turning to the differences and similarities between the two languages (the weak version of the contrastive analysis hypothesis). So we are dealing with a linguistic – contrastive teaching...
